www.post-gazette.com/pg/09083/957945-100.stm11-year-old to be tried as adult in killings Tuesday, March 24, 2009 By Sadie Gurman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Jordan Anthony Brown NEW CASTLE -- The 11-year-old boy accused of killing his father's pregnant fiancee last month will stand trial as an adult, Lawrence County Judge David Rishel ruled today. Jordan Brown sat silently during his preliminary hearing this afternoon, his hands and feet shackled. His attorneys said they planned to file a motion to have the boy's case moved to juvenile court, but will do so after they have obtained more forensic evidence, which they said was lacking today. Jordan was returned to a juvenile detention center in Erie, where he has been held since the end of February. His attorney, Dennis Elisco, said the boy was "thriving" there, and he won't try to have him released from detention until he has "seen more evidence" in the case. For Jordan to be tried as a juvenile, his attorneys will have to prove he is amenable to juvenile treatment, relying on factors such as his maturity level, the nature of the crime and what rehabilitation treatment he will undergo, among other issues, Lawrence County District Attorney John Bongivengo said. If he is convicted as an adult, he will serve a mandatory life sentence. Jordan is accused off shooting Kenzie Houk, 26, in the back of the head while she slept Feb. 20. Her unborn child also died in the attack. More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. First published on March 24, 2009 at 3:54 pm
