11 Year Old Charged in Double Homicide
Details emerged Saturday about the double homicide that took place in Lawrence County. "The shot was in the back of the head at point-blank range," said John Bongivengo, Lawrence County's District Attorney.
That's how 26 year old Kenzie Houk died Friday morning near Wampum in New Beaver borough. The death of Houk also caused the death of her unborn fetus, as she was only two weeks away from giving birth to a baby boy. "Right now, I'm talking from the bottom of my heart. I'm hurting so bad, you wouldn't believe," said Kenzie's father, Jack.
Early Saturday morning, Pennsylvania State Police charged the 11 year old son of Houk's boyfriend with 2 counts of criminal homicide. Police say the boy who is in fifth grade, shot Houk with a 20 gauge shotgun, made specifically for youths, while she was lying in bed.
Neighbors reacted to the news Saturday afternoon. "She was really high-spirited, a really nice lady," said Michael Myers who lives near the murder scene. "She was just really nice. I mean, it's hard to believe someone could do something like this."
Houk's two daughters were inside the house at the time of the murders. Police say her 7 year old daughter first implicated the 11 year old. The boy is currently being held in isolation at Lawrence County jail and, per Pennsylvania law, will be tried as an adult. "Anybody between the ages of 10 and older, and under the age of 18, would normally be tried as a juvenile. However, there are specific exceptions to that rule; the main one being homicide or murder," said District Attorney Bongivengo.
State police say the investigation into these murders is ongoing. Police spent the day at the scene trying to uncover more evidence. The 11 year old's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
